U.S. sends in drones against ISIS

The CIA and JSOC have been quietly sending in the drones against ISIS.

It’s not so secret now – but the CIA and U.S. Special Operations forces recently kicked off a covert operation to send drones into Syria to root out and kill leaders and key operatives with ISIS.

The Joint Special Operations Command joined the intelligence agency in running the offense some time ago, the Washington Post reported. The drone strikes have been credited with killing several senior-level ISIS terrorists, including a British official, Junaid Hussain, believed to have served as a leading operative in the terror group’s social media campaign to kill Americans on U.S. soil, officials told the newspaper.

The CIA is providing intelligence for the operatioon via its Counterterrorim Center, the Washington Post reported. JSOC is the group that’s been actually carrying out the drone strikes, the newspaper said, citing sources.

And the strikes are only going forward against those targets deemed “high value” in nature, the paper said.

“These people are being identified and targeted through a separate effort,” said one senior U.S. official familiar with the campaign, in reference to Hussain and others killed by drones in recent weeks, the Washington Post said.

Only a small number of strikes have actually gone forward via the CIA-JSOC partnership, officials said.

The operation comes just a few months after President Obama indicated he wanted the CIA to give up oversight of its drone strike program to the Defense Department, and instead, focus more on its core spying mission. Why? Part of the reason, suggested Peter Boogaard, White House National Security Council spokesman, was to increase the transparency of counterterrorism operations, the Washington Post reported.

The power shift, however, has been met with concerted opposition on Capitol Hill.

Senate Intelligence Committee members, for instance, sent a classified letter to the White House expressing their displeasure with any moves to limit the CIA’s ability to keep track of terrorists, the Washington Post said.
