Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson may have just locked down the NASCAR vote.
Carson’s bid to become the Republican Party’s 2016 presidential nominee received a boost on Monday when he was informally endorsed by Richard Petty at the racing icon’s camp for disabled children.
“We’re not necessarily endorsing him, but we are — you know what I mean?” Petty told the Associated Press Monday from Randleman, North Carolina. “He’s very humane. That’s one of his strong points, as far as we’re concerned.”

Carson and Petty then posed for pictures together shortly after the Republican said NASCAR fans should fly the Confederate flag “if it’s private property and that’s what they want to do,” AP reported.
An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Monday put Carson in second place with Republican primary voters at 20 percent.
Billionaire Donald Trump is in first, but his once-substantial lead has evaporated.
Trump is in first place with 21 percent of Republican primary voters, according to the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
The poll was conducted Sept. 20-24 among 230 GOP primary voters and has a plus-minus 6.5 percentage points margin for error.
