Ted Cruz rises, Jeb Bush tanks at Values Voter Summit

Religious conservatives were having nothing to do with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at the annual Values Voter Summit over the weekend. The political scion tied for dead last in this year’s VVS straw poll.

Who came out on top? It was Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who energized the crowd of Republicans at the Washington, D.C. event. Cruz took 35 percent of the vote in the straw poll, winning over the conservative Christian demographic within the GOP base — just as he has done in each of the past three VVS meetings.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson finished in second place in the straw poll — also his third time to play runner-up to Cruz among VVS voters. Businessman Donald Trump, who is leading in just about every major national GOP poll, fared far less well with religious conservatives, taking only 5 percent in the poll.

“I am humbled and honored to have the support of so many Christian Conservatives, Cruz said in a statement. “But in order for our values to truly be represented in the White House, it’s going to take millions of Christians encouraging each other to get involved and, most importantly, to vote.”

Who finished at the back of the pack? It was the same guy who’s polling there in most every survey: Jeb Bush.

From CNN:

[Behind Cruz and Carson], [t]he rest of the leaderboard included former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 14%, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio with 13% and real estate mogul Donald Trump at 5%.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, however, placed 12th – earning just seven votes.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, who announced the poll results, told reporters that Bush has been “challenged from the very beginning with conservatives.”

“It would help him if he would actually show up and talk to value voters,” Perkins said.

Perkins is probably being generous. Trump, after all, showed up and talked to “value voters,” telling them: “I believe in the Bible. I’m Christian. I love people.” It didn’t get him very far.

In fairness to Bush, there were a couple of candidates who managed to take fewer than seven votes — as in zero — so Bush technically didn’t finish dead last.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) didn’t get a single vote.
