CNN opens presidential debate doors to Joe Biden

CNN – the same cable outlet that forced Carly Fiorina to scramble and petition for a spot on the GOP debate stage, despite the fact her numbers were skyrocketing in the polls – has seemingly bent over backwards to accommodate Joe Biden, telegraphing to the vice president he can still participate in the Democratic Party mixer even though he hasn’t yet declared.

The media outlet announced Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O’Malley, Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee have all made the cut to appear on the Democratic National Committee-sanctioned presidential debate set for Oct. 13 in Las Vegas.

But apparently, so has Joe Biden – despite the fact he’s not even decided to run for the high office, yet.

CNN’s just-published debate participation criteria states candidates have to tout an average 1 percent support in three different polls taken between Aug. 1 and Oct. 10. The criteria also says candidates could wait until the last minute – debate day – to announce candidacies, and still quality for participation.

And that means the stage is wide open for Biden to fill.

“The new organization’s apparent message to Biden [is] despite the fact that he remains publicly uncommitted to launching a 2016 presidential run, it will keep a spot open for him,” as Hot Air pointed.

The embrace of openness is somewhat new. CNN’s standards of participation for Republican candidates in its recent debate required each meet a certain level of poll popularity, and each be declared race runners.

But CNN’s standards for the Democratic debate?

Can mainstream Americans really beat liberals? Here’s the how-to outline, in “Waking the Sleeping Giant.”

The criteria states: “[Biden] would need to file a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission – or merely public commit to filing such a statement – before taking the stage,” Hot Air reported.

Fiorina, by contrast, spent several tense days petitioning CNN for approval to join the tier-one stage, even though her poll numbers showed her a rising candidate star after her performance during the first GOP face-off on Fox News.
