High school students asked to answer questions about parents’ gun ownership

Students at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, Texas, were recently asked to fill out a survey that asked for details about their parents’ political views and whether they keep firearms at home, according to radio host and 2nd Amendment activist Michael Cargill.

The survey, handed out to students in a journalism class at the high school included questions such as:

  • “Does your family own any guns?”
  • “If so, how many?”
  • “What is their purpose?”
  • “Have you ever fired a gun?”
  • “If so, in what context?”
  • “What are your parents’ political views?”
  • “What are your political views?”

Cargill, via social media, applauded the idea of engaging students in conversations about the 2nd Amendment but pointed out that the survey is more than a little invasive.

“[The Second Amendment] is a great conversation for kids to have in the classroom and definitely for journalism because it applies directly to our Constitution … but the questions that concern me are the ones that ask ‘how many firearms does your parents have at home?’ and ‘what political affiliations do your parents have?’ That’s private,” he said.

According to a statement from the school, the survey was only handed out to about 100 students as part of a journalism class and was not mandatory. Still, many parents in the area weren’t pleased that the survey was handed out in the first place.

“Doesn’t matter if it’s a journalistic survey, it crosses the line,” one parent commented. “This wouldn’t be answered in my home and this is the reason that any poll similar to it is not accurate.”
