Planned Parenthood is under fire.
Planned Parenthood, under fire for undercover videos that tie the group to an alleged baby body parts-selling scheme, is celebrating its “National Pink Out Day” by offering attendees free screenings for sexually transmitted diseases.
The nationwide organization offers in its clinics a variety of health services, including abortions. But for weeks, it’s been fighting off organ harvesting claims and facing concerted fire from the public and Republicans on Capitol Hill, the latter of whom are trying to cut off federal funding.
Planned Parenthood isn’t going quietly. Its “National Pink Out Day,” which is a campaign of rallies in select cities and spots, is one plank in its plan to fight back. Another, apparently, is to give out free STD tests in 28 different communities around the nation – including Washington, D.C., the same day House Oversight and Government Reform Committee members are holding a hearing on accusations of the nonprofit’s organ-harvesting practices.
Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, is set to testify at this hearing, Time reported.
Richards has put out a statement about the organization’s push for full funding, the New York Times reported: “Women and men across he country turn to Planned Parenthood as a trusted provider of reproductive health care – one in five women in America has relied on Planned Parenthood for care in her lifetime. Denying people the ability to go to Planned Parenthood would harm millions of people. These baseless political attacks are about one thing – interfering with women’s personal medical decisions.”
