Trump: I’m similar to Reagan

Donald Trump

Donald Trump, the billionaire businessman who’s made massive waves with his presidential poll numbers, told CNN in a recent interview he shares many traits with America’s much-beloved 40th leader, Ronald Reagan.

Among them?

Reagan and he both entered politics via Democratic Party doors.

CNN’s Don Lemon asked Trump about his previous affiliation with the liberal party, and in reply, the presidential hopeful cited Reagan.

“If you look at Ronald Reagan, and he was a Democrat, he was actually, Don, he was a Democrat with a very liberal, or at least a pretty liberal bent, and he became a Republican with a somewhat conservative – I wouldn’t say very – but he was a conservative Republican,” Trump said, the Hill reported.

This isn’t the first time Trump’s brought up his similarities with Reagan. In a mid-August interview on Fox News with Sean Hannity, Trump declared: “He was a Democrat with a liberal bent and he became a great conservative … If you think of it, he was a little bit less conservative than people think but he had a great heart, and I have a great heart.”

He also told Chuck Todd in a “Meet the Press” interview on NBC around the same mid-August time frame that the last time America was truly great was during the Reagan administration.

“I would say that during the administration of Ronald Reagan, you felt proud to be an American,” he said then. “You felt really proud. I don’t think since then, to any great extent, people were proud.”

Trump’s been tapping into that mantra on his campaign trail, telling the public his greatest endeavor as president would be to “make America great again.”

In the CNN interview, Trump also distanced himself from Mitt Romney, the Republican Party’s 2012 candidate for president. Romney, in recent days, has been talked up as a potential last-minute entrant to the presidential race, in large part because big money donors and more establishment Republicans see Trump as a nonsensical candidate.

Trump suggested any party move to bring in Romney would prove a mistake.

“When Mitt Romney ran, there was a tremendous – millions of people that are Republicans and conservative Republicans and evangelicals and people that I have a great relationship with, they sat home for some reason and they did not vote, you know that, and I’m talking about millions of people,” he said, the Hill reported.

He then added: “Had they been energized and had they voted, you would have seen victory for Mitt Romney.”

Trump likened Romney’s 2012 performance to fomer Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s current campaign show. In previous statements, Trump has referred to Bush’s campaign as lackadaisical, and to Bush as a “low-energy person.”
