White House calls immigration surge last month ‘surprising’ as U.S. designated as world’s top spot for migrants

New figures out from a Senate immigration subcommittee show that the United States has become the top destination for the world’s migrants, including a rapidly growing number from the Middle East.

“The United States resettles the largest number of migrants in the world, and provides more funding and benefits than any other country in the world and any other region in the world. These are the facts,” according to the subcommittee, chaired by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.).

A report from the Senate body revealed that despite containing just 4.5 percent of the global total population, the U.S. takes in about 20 percent of the world’s migrants. By comparison, the combined Latin American countries contain 8.5 percent of global population but allow just 3.35 percent of world immigrants to resettle within their borders.

America’s immigration policies are so liberal, in fact, that it stands alone as the only nation on Earth that has taken in more than one-twentieth of the total migrant population.

Immigration from nations south of the U.S. border remains the largest source of new arrivals to the U.S. but that doesn’t mean all of the people coming in from Mexico are of Hispanic descent.

As news that the U.S. plans to accept a growing number of refugees from Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East, the report notes the extent to which the U.S. already welcomes immigrants from the region with open arms:

About 1 in 40 of all migrants living in the U.S. today are from the Middle East or North Africa; however, that population has been rapidly growing. More than 1 in 10 of the annual permanent migrants resettled in the U.S. is a Muslim migrant. By contrast, only about 1 in 300 of all migrants living in Mexico today are from the Middle East or North Africa. (About 1 in 7 migrants in Mexico hail from other Latin American countries, and about 7 in 10 migrants in Mexico are from Canada or the United States)…

To provide further perspective: in 2010 there were 3,166 migrants from the Middle East living in Mexico; between 2001 and today, the United States has issued green cards to approximately 900,000 migrants from the Middle East and 1.5 million to migrants from Muslim countries. Because it’s only a ten-year figure for the U.S., that means the U.S. has permanently resettled well more than 300 times as many Middle Eastern migrants as Mexico …

Meanwhile, the Obama administration is feigning ignorance about the consequences of its loose border policy.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest, without providing any specific numbers, said that Obama officials have noticed a “surprising uptick” in the number of unaccompanied minors and families illegally crossing the southern border in the past month.

Earnest said that the numbers are nowhere near as high as last year when the nation became overwhelmed by illegal immigrants but still higher than normal for summer months when extreme heat discourages illegal immigration.

“That is something that is concerning,” Earnest said, telling reporters that the administration would “closely monitor” the situation in the months ahead.

“It’s hard to know exactly what is — what may or may not be causing these latest numbers,” he added.

Maybe Earnest should ask GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump.
