Turns out, Trump’s support isn’t just from ‘low information’ voters after all

It’s become a trope in the mainstream press to associate the surprising and enthusiastic support for Donald Trump with the rabid ignorance of low-information voters — people who view elections as popularity contests instead of crucial policy-setting decisions.

The implication, too, has been that all these low-information voters are dwelling under the GOP tent; that they’re all a bunch of dumb rubes who trend conservative because, unlike their enlightened and ideologically nuanced liberal peers, they just don’t know any better.

Well, that’s all been blown up. Breitbart News did its own analysis of an August CNN poll to spot some trends CNN itself either missed — or ignored — when it originally released the results. Here’s what Breitbart found out about Trump’s supposed “low information” support base:

At first glance, the critics’ claims are partly validated by the crosstabs, which show that Trump leads among voters who did not go to college.

But a second glance shows he also leads among voters who did go to college.

At the invitation of Breitbart News, veteran Republican strategist Jim Innocenzi checked the data. He argues that many polls have a sample size that is too small to reliably gauge the preferences of subgroups, such as college voters. But the CNN poll has enough respondents to derive useful conclusions, he said.

“When you look at the college [versus] no college [support], Trump is at 24 [percent overall] as an aggregate. He’s at 30 percent no college, he’s at 21 percent attended college. That’s a nine-point difference,” he said.

“But you look at Jeb Bush and you can make the same argument. He’s at 13 percent [overall], he’s at 17 percent no college, 10 percent college. That’s a 7 point difference,” Innocenzi said.

“You can’t say that Trump is only attracting low information voters … because it’s not true,” he added. “He’s 2 to 1 over Bush on those that attended college.”

There are plenty of non-college-educated voters who love Trump, and the CNN poll, as well as others, reflect that. But a closer look at the numbers makes it clear that Trump’s appeal has a broader base — despite the way they’ve been portrayed in the mainstream press.
