The NBA’s all-time leading scorer went one-on-one with Donald Trump and got verbally dunked on. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was sent a handwritten insult in response to a highly critical op-ed he wrote for the Washington Post.
“Now I know why the press always treated you so badly — they couldn’t stand you. The fact is that you don’t have a clue about life and what has to be done to make America great again!” wrote Trump.
In a Wednesday opinion piece for the Post titled “This is the difference between Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders,” the former Los Angeles Lakers star criticized Trump’s treatment of Fox News’ Megyn Kelly and Univision’s Jorge Ramos. He added that Trump’s alleged attempts to “bully the press” were “anti-American.”
“Two roads diverged in a political wood, and [Trump] took the road of assaulting the Constitution and soon will be lost forever. [Bernie Sanders] will be a viable candidate who, regardless of whether he wins the nomination, will elevate the political process into something our Founding Fathers would be proud of,” wrote Abdul-Jabbar.
The NBA Hall of Fame player shared Trump’s note on multiple social-media platforms and wrote a response for the Post.
“Here again, he attacks a journalist who disagrees with him, not by disputing the points made but by hurling schoolyard insults such as ‘nobody likes you,’” wrote Abdul-Jabbar. “Look behind the nasty invective and you find an assault on the Constitution in the effort to silence the press through intimidation.”
The Hill reported Thursday that Trump has raised four points in a Monmouth University survey since the Aug. 6 Republican debate. The survey, which was conducted between Aug. 31 and Sept. 2, found that he would capture 30 percent nationally and has a 59 percent positive favorability rating.
The university questioned 366 registered Republicans and its poll has a 5.1 percentage-point margin for error, The Hill reported.
