An Ohio elementary school is teaching kids to respond to an active-shooter situation by picking up books and throwing them in self-defense.
According to WTTE News of Columbus, Ohio, Stevenson Elementary School’s protocol for active-shooter scenarios calls on students not to take up arms, but to take up “A Farewell to Arms.”
From WTTE:
Dean Spencer’s 9-year-old daughter Vanessa and 8-year-old son Nathan attend Stevenson Elementary School in Heath.
Spencer said his kids were told by school teachers to throw books at any one with a gun should they ever make their way into their library or classroom.
Spencer said he had to ask his daughter twice what she said before he believed her.
“To give them advice or commands to throw things at someone with a gun it’s absurd, it’s insane” Spencer said.
Asked about the protocol, school officials said throwing books is a “last line of defense” tactic and the primary concern is to get kids out of harm’s way and into a safe place.
“Heath City School District officials said 430 third-through-fifth graders at Stevenson are being trained to use the tactic as a last-line of defense if all else fails should the worst case scenario ever happen,” WTTE reports.
The Spencer family told the station they now plan to remove their kids from the public schools and home-school them instead.
Sadly, there was no word that the school also encourages kids to eat their Pop-Tarts into the shape of pistols and then pretend to fire fake bullets at their assailant. That’s understandable, though, because improvised phony Pop-Tarts weapons can be dangerous, and carrying one at school can get you in serious trouble.
