If the presidential race came down to a contest between the two female candidates from the Democratic and Republican parties, GOP upstart Carly Fiorina would edge out Hillary Clinton by a narrow margin — at least right now.
That’s one of many takeaways from a Quinnipiac University poll out Thursday. Hillary may lead the Democratic field, and Carly may still trail other GOP candidates in her own primary race — but if Fiorina had a direct shot at Clinton, the poll suggests, voters would prefer her.
“In head-to-head matchups, Clinton gets 43 percent to 44 percent for Fiorina,” Quinnipiac reported, noting that the poll’s margin of error (2.5 percentage points) leaves Clinton the tiniest degree of wiggle room.
Fiorina, whom those surveyed praised for besting most of the Republican field in her performance in last week’s party primary debate, still trails front-runner Donald Trump and his nearest competitor, Ben Carson.
But public perception of Fiorina’s place among the GOP field is beginning to swing in her favor, according to Quinnipiac.
“Carly Fiorina out-performed Donald Trump in last week’s presidential debate, Republican voters say 4-1, but she still trails Trump and Carson in the race for the nomination,” the summary states.
“… Fiorina did the best job in the September 16 presidential debate, according to 28 percent of all voters, including 39 percent of Republicans, with Trump ranked best by 11 percent of all voters, including 10 percent of Republicans. Trump did worst, 20 percent of all voters, including 22 percent of Republicans, say.”
One thing Fiorina (as well as a number of other emerging candidates) has going for her is a decided lack of polarizing baggage — baggage that alienates an entrenched segment of party voters from embracing candidates, like Trump, with abundant name recognition.
While Trump may have a firm hold on the lead spot, “29 percent of GOP voters say they ‘would definitely not support’” him, according to the poll.
“[W]hen the number of Republicans who ‘would definitely not support you’ is greater than the number who support you, where does that leave you?” remarked Quinnipiac’s Tim Malloy. “Welcome to Trump World, comparing his fragile support from his own party to Hillary Clinton’s sagging but still stronger support from her party.”
