A sheriff in Gwinnett County in Georgia has taken to the pages of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution to vent his frustration at what he calls the influence of “fringe groups” to further the mantra that police are racist and needful of control.
“To say that I’m angry,” said Sheriff Butch Conway, in the newspaper, “would be an understatement. I’m angry that fringe groups who started the culture of police hatred have widened the racial divide in our country by alleging that officer involved shootings stem from racism.”
Conway began with the Gwinnett County Police Department in 1973 and was elected to sheriff in 1996.
His statement also targets the media for “relentless coverage” of police shootings and adds, “the common denominator in every controversial case of officers using deadly force has been police interaction with people who do not respect the law,” he wrote.
“It’s not about race,” Conway said.
He added, the newspaper said: “Those inciting riots and committing murders are simply criminals and do not represent the majority of Americans. They are domestic terrorists with an agenda. Their message is that police lives don’t matter, which sure sounds like a hate group to me.”
His statements come on the heels of a North Carolina police chief, Surf City Police Chief Mike Halstead, retiring after an emergency meeting that was called over his Facebook post, calling Black Lives Matter a “terrorist” group. The post has since been deleted.
