From the as-goes-Europe, so-goes-America files: Britain’s new Opposition secretary for food and the environment wants to persuade people to turn to veganism by treating meat-eaters as if they were smokers.
Kerry McCarthy, the U.K. Opposition’s new Shadow Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, is an avowed vegan and an evangelist for animal rights and exploitation.
According to The Telegraph, McCarthy told one interviewer she believed meat-related industry should receive the same treatment as the tobacco industry.
“I really believe that meat should be treated in exactly the same way as tobacco, with public campaigns to stop people eating it,” she reportedly told a vegan magazine:
Progress on animal welfare is being made at EU level … but in the end it comes down to not eating meat or dairy.
The constant challenging of the environmental impact of livestock farming is making me more and more militant.
After her words sparked a backlash, McCarthy later told the BBC she plans to be open to other points of view.
“I have my own personal views on what I choose to eat, but I accept that we have a livestock industry in this country. What I want is for the industry to have the best welfare standards possible, to be sustainable as well as economically viable,” she said.
“… There will be different viewpoints, there will be violent disagreements, but it’s about trying to listen to the evidence, approach things with an open mind — and I am very much prepared to do that.”
