A former IT staffer for then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is expected to refuse to testify before a Congressional Benghazi panel, invoking his 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination for his alleged role in Hillary’s server scandal.
Bryan Pagliano, the tech worker who “helped Clinton manage a private e-mail server at her home while she was secretary of state,” according to The Washington Post, “rebuffed a subpoena to testify before a House committee investigating fatal terrorist attacks on two U.S. compounds in Benghazi, Libya, in September 2012 and now Clinton’s unusual private e-mail system.”
Pagliano’s attorney informed House Select Committee on Benghazi Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) that his client would not answer any of the committee’s questions, citing “an ongoing FBI investigation into whether Clinton’s e-mail arrangement — using a private e-mail account and server exclusively for all State Department business — compromised national security information.”
Clinton State Department aide Cheryl Mills was slated to testify before the committee Thursday. The Clinton campaign insisted that Hillary wishes Pagliano would also testify because, of course, she has nothing to hide.
“She has made every effort to answer questions and be as helpful as possible, and has encouraged her aides, current and former, to do the same, including Bryan Pagliano,” spokesman Nick Merrill said in a press release.
Democrats on the investigative committee are naturally upset that there even is an investigation, but they acknowledge that all the evil right-wing conspiracies that threaten to sink Hillary might scare a lowly tech worker into playing quiet mouse.
“Although multiple legal experts agree that there is no evidence of criminal activity, it is certainly understandable that this witness’ attorneys advise him to assert his Fifth Amendment rights,” ranking member Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) said in a statement, “especially given the onslaught of wild and unsubstantiated accusations by Republican presidential candidates, members of Congress and others based on false leaks about the investigation.”
