Alaskan salmon nails Obama

Maybe it was a Republican salmon.

Or maybe it was just – as President Obama quipped – that “he was happy to see me.”

Whatever the explanation, Obama got a surprise of the messy kind when being shown a salmon during his current Alaska tour to promote government action on climate change.

“That’s a nice looking fish,” Bloomberg reported Obama saying as he spoke with two Alaskan women on the shore of Bristol Bay.

The president took hold of the salmon, inserting his fingers beneath the gills, and that’s when the fish let loose.

“You see that? Something got on my shoes. He was spawning a bit,” Obama said.

It is yet undetermined what exactly the fish spurted.

U.S. presidents’ interactions with wildlife have been mixed.

President Theodore Roosevelt, an accomplished outdoorsman and hunter, collected big-game trophies from around the world.

President Jimmy Carter became the object of ridicule in 1979 when he was photographed splashing away a large rabbit that had leaped into the water and aggressively swam toward his fishing boat, in what the media dubbed the “killer rabbit attack.”

In 1826, the Marquis de Lafayette, who had assisted the Americans in the Revolutionary War, gave President John Quincy Adams an alligator as a gift. The beast was kept in the East Room bathroom where Adams reportedly enjoyed startling guests.
