Dalai Lama: Europe’s let in ‘too many’ refugees

The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, warned that Europe’s let in “too many” refugees and the whole demographic shape of the United Kingdom is facing dramatic change.

“We feel the misery” of the refugees, and we have “a responsibility to help,” he said, in an interview with Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper. “[But there are] too many. … There are so many.”

He went on, speaking of the potential for an entire block of nations to see huge shifts.

“Europe, for example, Germany, cannot become an Arab country,” he said. “Germany is Germany.”

He suggested “temporary” accommodations for the refugees is morally proper, rather than permanent, and said the goal of aid should be bringing the refugees back home and rebuilding their countries.

The Dalai Lama’s comments come at a time when Germany, just last year, took in more than a million refugees from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
