Dr. James Dobson calls Trump ‘a baby Christian’

Donald Trump has called the Bible his favorite book.

Donald Trump has called the Bible his favorite book.

One of the leading lights of evangelical Christianity says Donald Trump has come “to accept a relationship with Christ,” repented of his sins and been “born-again.”

Dr. James C. Dobson, who met with Trump last Tuesday in New York, along with 1,000 other evangelical leaders, said in a recorded interview with Pennsylvania pastor Michael Anthony that he knew the person who recently led Trump to Christ, but he has not disclosed who it was.

“[H]e did accept a relationship with Christ,” Dobson said. “I know the person who led him to Christ – that’s fairly recent. “I don’t know when it was, but it has not been long. I believe he really made a commitment, but he’s a baby Christian.”

Anthony posted the interview to his blog Friday. Dr. Dobson could not be reached on Saturday, and the Trump campaign has not commented.

In the interview, Dr. Dobson joked that Christians should take it easy on Mr. Trump for what some might perceive as slip-ups.

“You got to cut him some slack,” Dr. Dobson said. “He didn’t grow up like we did.”

Anthony referred to the Damascus-road conversion of Saul, a zealous Pharisee, who later became the Apostle Paul: “He didn’t know the language either.”

Dr. Dobson agreed.

“I think there’s hope for him,” Dr. Dobson said. “And I think there’s hope for us.”

Trump has appeared uncomfortable talking about his faith on the campaign, but he did say the Bible was his favorite book, even topping his own “Art of the Deal.” He declined, however, to name a favorite verse.

“The Bible means a lot to me, but I don’t want to get into specifics,” he told Bloomberg Television.

Trump said nothing about his “born-again” experience in the biggest meeting ever held between evangelical leaders and a presidential candidate last Tuesday. But he did tell the group that they need to better exercise their power.
