It only took two polls to start a political feeding frenzy by Donald Trump’s critics.
The Republican presidential hopeful took a slight dip in two polls released over the last 48 hours.
A Monmouth University poll released Monday shows retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson ahead of Trump 32 percent to 18 percent, and a New York Times/CBS News survey released Tuesday gives the doctor a 26 percent national edge to Trump’s 22 percent.
Radio host Rush Limbaugh played a montage of news coverage on Tuesday to highlight the apparent glee hosts took in delivering the news.
“Carson opening up a double-digit lead on Donald Trump,” proclaimed ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.
“Breaking news. Ben Carson is surging ahead of Donald Trump for the first time, not just in Iowa, in a national poll,” announced CNN’s Chris Cuomo.
“For months Donald Trump seemed unstoppable, but this morning more proof his campaign is struggling,” said ABC’s Tm Llams.
Limbaugh said media personalities and elites in the Republican establishment were giddy because they want to take credit for Trump’s polling slump.
“The Drive-By Media and even some in the conservative media are so excited they can barely stand it because of the latest polling data, both nationally and in Iowa. And depending on which networks you watch, you Trumpsters out there better prepare yourselves, because today it’s over. Trump has peaked and your best days are behind you,” said Limbaugh. “The Hawkeye Cauci comes up on February 1st. That’s 97 days from now, and the Drive-Bys think it’s over. They think they’ve made it happen. There’s so much negative talking about Trump they’re patting themselves on the back throughout the media. … They’re all kind of hanging the hat on their own heads as having the power and influence to do it.”
Trump’s political rivals did not hide their gloating.
“I predicted it a month ago,” Steve Munisteri, a senior adviser to Sen. Rand Paul’s presidential campaign, told Politico on Tuesday.
“That does my heart good,” added veteran Republican operative Charlie Black, who served as a top adviser for former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.
Trump shrugged off polls showing Carson’s surge as statistical outliers.
“I get these two polls – and remember, I don’t believe them, I don’t believe them – in Iowa. And I love Iowa,” Trump said during a Florida campaign event on Saturday, Business Insider reported.
“I don’t get it,” Trump added on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Tuesday, CNN reported. “I’m going there [to Iowa] actually today and I have tremendous crowds and I have tremendous love in the room and, you know, we seem to have hit a chord. But some of these polls coming out, I don’t quite get it.”
A survey released by One America News Network on Tuesday gives Trump a 14-point lead over Carson. The network’s pollsters found support for the billionaire at 35.6 percent, compared with 21.7 percent Carson, the Hill reported.
