Obama to Boehner: ‘Man, I’m going to miss you’

According to the former speaker of the House, President Barack Obama is sad to see him go.

Boehner, who has controlled the Speaker’s gavel for the past five years, handed House leadership over to Wisconsin Republican Paul Ryan on Thursday.

Boehner told Fox News that he and President Obama have never been close personally, but the retired speaker said they had a comfortable political relationship.

“We had disagreements over all kinds of issues but we have a good relationship,” Boehner said, “because I think it’s essential that the leaders be able to work with each other, have a relationship, have some trust so we can do the nation’s business.”

According to Boehner, after learning about his retirement the president called him to express his sadness to see the Speaker go.

“He said, ‘Boehner, man, I’m gonna miss you,’” Boehner said.

“Yes you are, Mr. President. Yes you are,” Boehner replied.

Boehner’s willingness to acquiesce to Obama’s wishes has long annoyed conservative Republicans.

Back in January, a number of top U.S. conservatives called for Boehner’s ouster, with some calling for conservative Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina to serve as his replacement.

Fox News’ Sean Hannity was among those voices, saying: “John Boehner has snubbed and ignored conservatives for too long as evidenced by the recent cromnibus budget deal he made with Obama, Reid and Hoyer. It’s time he step aside for the good of country and the conservative movement.”

As House speaker, when Boehner wasn’t ignoring conservatives, he was insulting them.

During a contentious vote on the future of the National Labor Relations Board, Boehner expressed frustration with Republicans who don’t toe the establishment line.

“On any given day, 16 of my members decide they’re going to go this way, and all the sudden I have nothing,” Boehner said at the time. “You might notice I have a few knuckleheads in my conference.”

Boehner has also spent recent years attacking members of the GOP who disagree with him by claiming the lawmakers are working on behalf of “outside” groups.

After he attacked conservatives who expressed disdain for his budget deal in 2013, Boehner lashed out and promised a war against Tea Party and libertarian-leaning lawmakers.

It’s safe to say that, unlike Obama, conservatives aren’t going to miss Boehner.
