Harry Reid cites founders in call for Rubio to resign

Sen. Harry Reid, the highest ranking Democrat in the Senate, picked up a mantra pushed by the Florida Sun-Sentinel and then by presidential hopeful Jeb Bush, and said Sen. Marco Rubio ought to resign his campaign for the White House – and he underscored that viewpoint by hearkening to the Founding Fathers.

In an interview with Politico, Reid said: “Why shouldn’t he [resign]? He hates the Senate. Why should the taxpayers of this country and people of Florida put up with having only one senator? Doesn’t seem fair to me.”

His comments came after the Sun-Sentinel editorialized Rubio should step down from his senate seat because he was missing too many votes and wasn’t adequately representing Florida, as WND previously reported. Presidential hopeful Bush furthered that mantra during the Wednesday evening CNBC primary debate, turning to Rubio on stage and bluntly telling him he was missing too many votes and should step down from office.

Now Reid’s jumped on the bandwagon.

“For Marco Rubio here to dump on the Senate, this institution established by our Founding Fathers, he should be ashamed of himself,” Reid said. “And the people of Florida, why they put up with it, I don’t know. They damn sure aren’t getting their money’s worth.”

Rubio on Thursday spoke about the matter of his missed votes, saying his time away from Capitol Hill and his inability to cast ballots on all the legislative issues is still better than one alternative: a Hillary Clinton in the White House, he said, the Hill reported.

Meanwhile, Rubio spokesman Alex Conant responded directly to Reid’s comments, saying in Politico: “I must have forgotten Harry Reid similarly calling on Barack Obama to resign the Senate when he missed even more votes to run for president. It’s obvious that Democrat leaders are very worried that Marco will beat Clinton next year.”
