Speaker of the House John Boehner delivered a tearful goodbye to fellow members of Congress Thursday, and shortly after, turned over the podium for a nomination for likely incoming leader, Rep. Paul Ryan.
In brief comments to colleagues broadcast by national television, Boehner said of his sometimes tenuous leadership: “Real change doesn’t just happen – it takes time.”
He then credited his aides and assistants for their hard work, saying “no one in Congress can be who they are without staff.” The outgoing Ohio congressman also said he’s spent his life chasing the “American dream.”
Boehner then turned over his podium for an introduction to Ryan for formal nomination to the speaker role.
Can the Republican Party save itself? Richard Viguerie has the prescription in “Takeover.”
Ryan is largely expected to win the leadership position especially after three Republican caucuses gave their go-ahead to his post.
The chamber proceedings included the presence of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and wife, Ann.
