Former Paul aides acquitted of bogus charges

The Barack Obama (no)Justice Department’s efforts to derail the campaigns of Sens. Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul missed their marks again, as federal juries have acquitted former aids to the two of multiple federal charges.

Jesse Benton, a former aide to Ron Paul, Rand Paul and McConnell and the former head of a Rand Paul super PAC, beat the rap on charges of making false statements to the FBI and four charges related to the alleged bribing of a former Iowa senator during Ron Paul’s 2012 presidential run. Another former Paul political operative, Demitrios Kesari, was acquitted of obstruction of justice charges but convicted of causing a false record.

The story of Benton’s and Kesari’s troubles with the justice department began with an investigation into dark money in the 2012 Iowa Republican Caucus and whether a state senator was paid by the Ron Paul campaign to jump from Michele Bachmann’s ship and throw his allegiance to Ron Paul. It’s a convoluted tale.

Despite the ongoing scandal, McConnell survived against a media-overhyped Democratic challenger — Alison Lundergan Grimes — who turned out to be essentially nonexistent on election night.

In a statement Thursday, Rand Paul said, “I am happy that justice has been served.”

Hardly. Those responsible for dragging the Pauls through the mud with false charges for political ends won’t face the justice they deserve.
