President Obama, during delivery of Ramadan remarks, took a seeming sideswipe at Donald Trump – without naming names – and made it clear he stood firmly alongside Muslims in America in opposition to those who “seek to divide” the country.
He also vowed to continue the open-arm welcome of immigrants and refugees, Politico reported.
“I stand firmly with Muslim American communities in rejection of the voices that seek to divide us or limit our religious freedoms or civil rights,” Obama said. “I stand committed to safeguarding the civil rights of all Americans no matter their religion or appearance. I stand in celebration of our common humanity and dedication to peace and justice for all.”
Obama then said he looked with anticipation on hosting Muslims at the White House in honor of Ramadan, the faith’s month-long holiday that wraps in July.
The president’s comments come just a short time after Trump – who’s pledged on the campaign trail to not only crack down on border security, but also limit or outright ban the number of Muslims allowed in the nation, for a temporary time – suggested a Muslim judge may be biased against him. The judge, Gonzalo Curiel, is sitting over a case against Trump dealing with complaints against his former Trump University.
