Boston Globe blasts tearful headline for gun control

The cover of the Boston Globe, post-Orlando.

The Boston Globe, a daily purchased by the New York Times Company in 1993 and then by a businessman with holdings in the Red Sox a couple years later, blasted forth an emotionally charged headline on its Thursday front page that alluded to the Orlando shootings and read, bluntly, in all caps: “MAKE IT STOP.”

Above was a small notation that marked the piece as “opinion.”

The ‘Stop Hillary’ campaign is on fire! Join the surging response to this theme: ‘Clinton for prosecution, not president’

The accompanying image of a life-siz AR-15, running lengthwise from the top to the bottom of the page, also included a black spot with these words beneath: “Bullet entry actual size.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren cheered the cover in a tweet.

“This is the cover of the @BostonGlobe [Thursday] – & they are 100% correct,” she tweeted.

The cover, however, is factually inaccurate in that Orlando’s shooter, radical Islamist Omar Mateen, who reportedly pledged allegiance to ISIS both in the leadup and during his massacre, with a 911 emergency telephone call, did not use an AR-15. Rather, he used a Sig Sauer MCX carbine.

Media around the nation reported Mateen used an AR-15 due in large part to Orlando Police Chief John Mina’s claim that the attack was committed via an “AR-15-style assault rifle.”
