The latest USA Today/Suffolk University poll on the Republican presidential candidates shows Donald Trump hanging on tightly to his lead, albeit Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina moving up quickly.
Jeb Bush, meanwhile, has tumbled, down from second place two months ago to fifth.
“I just want somebody who is going to move our country in a direction different from where it is currently,” said Anthony Edelen, a small-business owner in South Dakota, explaining to USA Today why he likes Trump and Fiorina.
Rounding out fourth place is Sen. Marco Rubio, with 9 percentage points. Several candidates – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham – have fallen to low favor with voters, registering on poll scales at 1 percent or below.
Some pundits have said Trump is losing ground, while Carson and Fiorina are both gaining. But his 23 percent point poll lead puts him six points higher than in July. And Carson and Fiorina, while both gaining steam, are nonetheless substantially behind Trump in the polls, tied at 13 percent in this recent USA Today/Suffolk University survey.
Carson did squeak out a win over Trump in one area of voter likability however: Facebook. The Wrap reported his campaign site on the social media page boasts 4 million-plus fans, 100,000 or so more than Trump’s.
Carson noted the achievement in a tweet: “We the People continue to grow! Thank you making us the #1 Presidential campaign on Facebook!.”
