Parents outraged by public school lessons glorifying Islam

Parents in a Georgia community are enraged after learning their children were taught that Allah is the same god worshiped by Christians and Jews.

According to WSB-TV Atlanta, a group of parents wants is asking that their middle-school students in Walton County schools be permitted to opt out coursework that requires the children to learn about Islam.

“My daughter had to learn the Shiad, and the five pillars of Islam, which is what you learn to convert, but they never once learned anything about the Ten Commandments or anything about God,” parent Michelle King told reporters.

Another parent said he was struck by this line in his daughter’s homework: “Allah is the same God worshiped by Jews and Christians.”

Georgia Department of Education Spokeman Matt Cardoza responded to the concerns in a statement, saying: “This element is not an evaluation of any religion, nor is it a course in the belief system of any religion.”

He added that local educators who go beyond the state course requirement of asking students to “compare and contrast the prominent religions in the Middle East Judaism, Islam, and Christianity” do so at their own discretion.

While some parents have asked that the material be scrapped completely, others suggested that atrocities currently being carried out by some religious extremists be taught alongside the material.

This isn’t the first report of controversy involving talk of Islam in U.S. public schools.

Earlier this month, parents of middle-school children in Tennessee’s Maury County School District were angered when students were forced to write, “There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is his prophet,” in a lesson about the pillars of Islam.

In both cases, parents noted that teaching focused on Islam far more than it did the history of Christianity.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) said the lessons were a form of “indoctrination.”

“It is reprehensible that our school system has exhibited this double-standard, more concerned with teaching the practices of Islam than the history of Christianity. Tennessee parents have a right to be outraged and I stand by them in this fight,” she said of the Tennessee incident.
