If organized labor is always a shoe-in for the Democratic presidential nominee, then Hillary Clinton — that party’s troubled front-runner — must be doing something very, very wrong.
Either that, or Donald Trump — the Republican leader — must be doing something very right. The news has been peppered with recent stories about Clinton’s support slipping in union strongholds, as well as with specific labor groups, while those same groups demonstrate an increasing interest in hearing what Trump has to say before they make and endorsement decision.
The Teamsters this week decided to hold off on endorsing any candidate until they have the chance to “sit down with Republican candidates — most notably, front-runner Donald Trump who has collaborated with unionized work forces across his real estate career,” Fox News reports.
While Trump’s name dominates that story, his isn’t the only one from the GOP candidate roster. “I think John Kasich might be worth a look from them. Rand Paul has shown a willingness to work with people. Marco Rubio, perhaps also. There’s four right there [counting Trump],” former Michigan Congressman Pete Hoekstra told Fox News.
In union-dominated areas, Trump is polling far above Clinton.
“Macomb County, Michigan, has a population of approx. 850,000people and is a prominent swing region. Macomb is known for a strong independent streak and is the home of many Reagan Dems,” reports Conservative Intel:
Macomb County, Michigan, has a population of approx. 850,000 people and is a prominent swing region. Macomb is known for a strong independent streak and is the home of many Reagan Dems.
According to pollster Steve Mitchell, all the GOP candidates being polled against Hillary in that critical Macomb region are beating her soundly.
“In Macomb, all three GOP candidates lead by a good margins; Trump by 27%, Rubio by 10% and Bush by 9%,” Mitchell said in a press release.
Notably, said Hoekstra, the Teamsters “aren’t that interested in meeting with Hillary,” continuing a strained relationship with the Clintons that predates her failed bid for the 2008 presidential nomination.
There’s still nothing that suggests Trump will ultimately beat out all others for their endorsement, though. In fact, according to Politico, the Teamsters aren’t the only labor groups that may be holding out for Vice President Joe Biden to enter the race.
Both the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) recently declined to put Clinton’s endorsement to a vote. Those demonstrations of no confidence are casting a huge shadow over the Clinton campaign.
“The decisions are a setback for Hillary Clinton, who has been courting the labor giants in the hopes of an early lock down of two powerhouse unions that can organize millions of members and resources on the ground,” Politico reports. “And they come against the backdrop of a Clinton campaign show of force — in terms of establishment donors, delegates and endorsements — as Biden weighs his options. Adding the support of two of the most muscular unions now would have sent a powerful message there is little room in the race for the vice president.”
But that’s a message that Biden — and Trump, for that matter — won’t be getting anytime soon.
