The Department of Justice has reached a settlement with Cleveland city officials over civil rights violations committed by police.
Details of the deal haven’t been released, but could be as early as Tuesday.
The settlement comes just days after a white police officer was acquitted of manslaughter in the shooting death of two unarmed black suspects who sat in their car. The 2012 incident involved several officers who fired 137 rounds into the suspects’ car, after mistaking a vehicle backfire for gunshots.
The vehicle then fled and 62 police cars were ultimately involved in the chase. Once the car was backed ito a corner, 13 police fired shots into the vehicle, the Associated Press reported.
Feds launched an investigation and in December, ordered the city to create a reform plan for police. Among the Department of Justice’s findings: Police regularly used excessive force, including stun guns on handcuffed suspects, the Associated Press reported.
In the wake of the officer’s acquittal, Cleveland protesters in recent days have taken to the streets. Over the weekend, 71 were arrested, with some charged with felony offenses.
