Sen. Bernie Sanders, a self-described socialist seeking the Democratic Party’s nod to the presidency in 2016, has called on campaign followers to start a “political revolution” to dramatically shift the tone and nature of the nation.
“[We need] a political revolution to transform our country economically, politically, socially and environmentally,” he said, at a campaign event in Vermont, the Hill reported. “Enough is enough. This great nation and its government belong to all of the people and not to a handful of billionaires.”
Sanders pressed for more progressive reforms, beginning with a concerted effort to stop the “planetary crisis of climate change,” he said.
He also went after the wealthy, suggesting those with huge amounts of money should not be allowed so much influence in American life.
“There is something profoundly wrong when one family owns more wealth than the bottom 130 million Americans,” Sanders said, the Hill reported. “This grotesque level of inequality is immoral. It is bad economics. It is unsustainable.”
He also called such disparity a product of a “rigged economay” and said “this is not what America is supposed to be about.”
Sanders is challenging former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the Democratic ticket to the White House. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is expected to joing the race this weekend.
