Police in Rio Rancho, Mexico, were searching Tuesday for the suspect who shot and killed a fellow officer and fled in a Dodge pick-up truck.
The details of the shooting haven’t been released. It is believed the officer had a confrontation with the suspect, though.
The officer, a four-year veteran of the force, was the first in the department to ever die in the line of duty, CNN reported. Two other officers in the department previously died in traffic wrecks.
The name of the shot officer isn’t yet known.
A witness said to Action 7 News he heard sirens and moments later, gunshots. He then said he saw an officer laying on the ground.
“I hear, pop, pop, pop, pop. Four shots, and I come around thiss corner, I don’t see anyone,” said the witness, KOAT.com reported. “Then I look forward and he’s giving him CPR.”
