Democrats say they’re hoping the Republican presidential primary leads to a White House race faceoff with Sen. Ted Cruz, not former Gov. Jeb Bush, because a centrist conservative would prove tough to beat.
And Republicans admit the reality of nationwide races – that moderates do indeed have easier times of reeling in votes.
“Unquestionably, without going into names, a more centrist Republican candidate is tougher to campaign against,” said Rep. Steve Israel, who’s heading up the messaging for House Democrats, the Hill reported.
He went on: “All the polling shows us that the Republican brand is highly unpopular. A Republican who’s reflecting that brand all the way on the right is easy to win against. A Republican who plays against the brand is harder to win against.”
The Hill conducted a survey and found most Democrats questioned favor firebrand Cruz to win the primary, because he’ll prove the easiest to beat in the general election. They fear Bush because of his family name, his moderate message and his ability to raise millions.
“I don’t [dispute] that Cruz is a force. he’s demonstrated that, but he’s the force that we’d like to see,” said Rep. John Larson, the former House Democratic Caucus head. “He’s a very talented and capable person, but his path to ascendency is to take them further right than they already are and in order for them to win, they’ve got to be center-right.”
Also on the watch list for Democrats: Sen. Marco Rubio and Gov. Scott Walker, two politicos with proven fundraising abilities and appeal with Independents.
“[They’re] formidable opponents,” said Rep. Raul Grijalva, pointing particularly at Rubio “because he has no record [and] can make it up as he goes,” the Hill reported.
