Former Dirty Jobs host Mike Rowe has a message for America’s recent graduates. And what it lacks in the fluffy “follow your dreams” advice everyone else seems to have for folks just starting out, it makes up for in the kind of pragmatism that could make the American Dream achievable once again.
According to Rowe, Hollywood stars and politicians are doing young Americans a massive disservice by claiming that everyone should follow their passion rather than look for well-paying and meaningful work.
“Just because you’re passionate about something doesn’t mean you won’t suck at it,” Rowe said in his Dirty Truth segment from the free education website PragerU.
A dream job, Rowe contends, is just that—a dream.
“Just because you’ve earned a degree in your chosen field, it doesn’t mean you’re going to find your dream job,” Rowe said.
Rowe went on to note that job satisfaction and success often has little to do with the work itself.
He recounted what one man he met on Dirty Jobs told him about becoming passionate about cleaning septic tanks.
“I looked around to see where everyone else was headed, and then I went the opposite way. Then I got good at my work,” the septic tank cleaner told Rowe. “Then I began to prosper. Then one day, I realized I was passionate about other people’s crap.”
The bottom line, Rowe said, is that passion is of little use unless job seekers are headed in a sensible direction for prosperity.
“Never follow your passion, but always bring it with you,” he concluded.
