Rubio changes mind – ‘getting in’ Senate race

Sen. Marco Rubio

Sen. Marco Rubio may have said in October he wasn’t running for Senate re-election, and he may have repeated that mantra in March, as his presidential aspirations went down in flames – but the story’s changed and on Friday, at least one of his close political allies said the Florida pol will indeed seek the seat once again.

Rep. David Jolly told CNN Rubio is running, a claim that came just two days after Rubio himself said he would “reconsider” his earlier decision to not run.

Jolly is currently running for the Senate seat held by Rubio. But he’s said on previous occasions he would drop his bid if Rubio decided to seek re-election, and instead switch gears and run for another term in the House.

Rubio on Wednesday said he was reconsidering a run at his Senate seat, a change of heart political insiders say was based in part on the Orlando shootings and the need to keep the district in Republican hands.

But this is a dramatic change in tone and view from the last few months.

In October, as the Washington Post reported, Rubio said he was “frustrated” with his service in the Senate.

“That’s why I’m missing votes,” he said then. “Because I am leaving the Senate. I am not running for re-election.”

And in March, he said similarly.

In a press conference on Capitol Hill after losing his home state to Donald Trump in the presidential primary, Rubio said, the Wall Street Journal reported: “I’m not running for re-election in the Senate. I’m going to finish out my term here.”

Political supporters had been pressing Rubio in the days since the terror attack on the gay club, Pulse, that left 49 dead and 53 injured that the party could not take a chance of losing his seat and that the best chance for Republicans to keep it would be if he ran again.
