Speaker Paul Ryan
Speaker Paul Ryan shared some harsh criticisms about Donald Trump during an event on Capitol Hill on Tuesday about poverty, telling the crowd of gathered reporters: The billionaire businessman was not only out of line about his remarks on Judge Gonzales Curiel – he was “racist.”
His words, the Hill reported: “I regret these comments that he made. Saying a person can’t do their job because of their race is sort of the textbook definition of racist comments … I think that should be absolutely disavowed.”
Ryan’s remarks came in response to Trump’s view of U.S. District Judge Curiel, who’s overseeing the case against Trump University. Trump referred to Curiel’s Hispanic background as potentially impacting the outcome of the case, given his frequent calls for a border wall on the campaign trail. As WND reported, Curiel also has ties to the San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association.
Ryan, who endorsed Trump last week – after a widely publicized refusal to back the billionaire, even at a time when he was the lone standing candidate in the Republican Party – didn’t go so far as to say he would retract his support for the candidate.
Others, meanwhile, have already come out in criticism of Ryan.
Trump spokesman Jeffrey Lord said on CNN on Tuesday: “Speaker Ryan is wrong and Speaker Ryan has apparently switched positions and is now supporting identity politics, which is racist.”
Lord’s remarks followed a message from Trump on Monday that those who supported him and spoke to the press for him, ought to turn the tables on the racist label.
“The people asking the questions,” Trump said, in a Monday conference call reported by the Hill, “those are the racists. I would go at them.”
