‘Never Trump’ crowd hints at candidate David French

The “Never Trump” camp, led most prominently by neoconservative Weekly Standard editor William Kristol, who has hinted for weeks now about a third party candidate coming in and scooping Donald Trump’s votes, may now have an actual person who’s agreed to run: David French, a constitutional lawyer, Iraq War veteran and writer at National Review.

That’s according to Bloomberg Politics, citing “two Republicans intimately familiar with Bill Kristol’s efforts.”

The report isn’t confirmed.

“Reached in Israel,” Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin and John Heilemann wrote, “Kristol declined to comment on his efforts to induce French to run. The two Republicans confirmed that French is open to launching a bid, but that he has not made a final decision. … However, according to this person, some conservative donors look favorably on the prospect of French entering the fray.”

Kristol later confirmed to CNN he does indeed have eyes set on French, who is also a recipient of the Bronze Star and author of several books.

Meanwhile, other conservatives are circling and considering. As the Hill noted, Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor and twice-failed presidential hopeful, indicated possible support for a French run.

Romney tweeted, shortly after news of the French campaign connection broke: “I know David French to be an honorable, intelligent and patriotic person. I look forward to following what he has to say.”

But Romney’s support could be simple tit-for-tat; just last week, in an article for National Review, French slammed Trump and Hillary Clinton and called for the ex-governor to get back in the presidential game and seek the White House once again. In the article, French wrote that Romney was “the only man who combines the integrity, financial resources, name recognition and broad public support to make a realistic independent run at the presidency.”

Kristol has been campaigning hard for a third-party candidate to rise up and take on Trump, and over the weekend, tweeted out he’s found an “impressive” individual “with a strong team and a real chance” to win and would soon announce the name, as WND reported.

Trump, meanwhile, responded to Kristol’s claims with tweets of his own, slamming the neocon as an “embarrassed loser” and a “dummy” who is trying to “get a spoiler to run as an Independent.”

And on French, the Trump campaign was no less blunt.

Trump social media director Dan Scavino took to Twitter to react to the French news with this short but powerful message: “WHO!?” Alongside was an emoji, laughing so hard tears poured.
