Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who once pledged to support whomever emerged as the Republican Party presidential nominee, now said he isn’t at the point where he can back Donald Trump – that he “just can’t do it” at this point in time.

“You know, it’s painful, it’s painful,” he said, in an interview on “Morning Joe” on MSNBC, in context of discussing his pledge on the campaign trail to vote for the eventual Republican pick. “You know, people even get divorces, you know? I man, somethings, things come out that, look – I’m sorry that this has happened. But we’ll see where it ends up. I’m not making any final decision yet, but at this point, I just can’t do it.”

Kasich actually in May back-tracked on his pledge, made at the first candidates’ debate on national television, to support the Republican nominee. Then, Trump was leading in the polls, followed closely by Cruz, and Kasich, who was still in the race, told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that he regretted his pledge.

He said at the time, Breitbart reported: “All of us shouldn’t even have answered that question [on the pledge] … [but] what the heck, sometimes you answer questions when you ought to just say, ‘I’m not answering it.’”

Trump and Cruz, in that same interview, also said they would not necessarily support the party’s final pick for president.

But Kasich is truly agonizing over the Trump pick, raising biblical points – the story of Saul – to show how surprising a change of mind and character can sometimes be.

“I know as governor of Ohio, with some people who pound on mee, I said I’m not prepared to do it [endorse] and [Trump’s] going to have to change,” Kasich said, Politico reported. “But unless [he] changes, you know, I’m not going to be able to get there [point of endorsing]. So, I’ll watch.”

Kasich is the fourth governor to say he won’t endorse Trump. Others on that list include Larry Hogan of Maryland, Rick Snyder of Michigan and Charlie Baker of Massachusetts.

“Well, the list is getting tall,” he said. “It’s getting bigger.
