Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said in a telephone interview with the Daily Mail that he would be voting for Donald Trump this November – a decision, he said, which was hardly a tough one to make at all.
“[It’s] not a close call,” the former George W. Bush administration official said.
Among the Trump policies and platforms he agrees with, the Daily Mail reported: the billionaire’s press for NATO reform and his views on refugees and terrorism risks.
“I’m a Republican, and there’s not any doubt in my mind how I’ll vote,” Rumsfeld said. “I don’t believe Hillary Clinton is qualified to be president of the United States.”
Meanwhile, Trump reacted with a humble thanks.
“I am incredibly grateful for the support of Secretary Rumsfeld and I am very honored he supports my stances on NATO, the need to defeat ISIS and stop immigration of Syrian refugees,” Trump said, to the Daily Mail.
Bush, meanwhile, is one of the high-ranking Republican figures who has hesitated to endorse the presumptive GOP presidential pick. Bush announced he won’t be attending the Republican National Convention in Cleveland; Colin Powell, Bush’s former secretary of State, has come out swinging against Trump over immigration.
But as Rumsfeld reminded, “He supported Obama, Colin did. That’s nothing new.”
