Sen. Ben Sasse
Sen. Ben Sasse, who’s emerged in recent times as one of the loudest opponents of Donald Trump’s campaign, is facing fire from within the ranks of his own Republican Party by those who look at his one-and-a-half years of experience in the Senate and wonder: Why is he so ingrained on this issue?
“It’s disappointing, and I think frankly, it’s conduct that [his fellow] Nebraskans do not find becoming of a United States senator who’s got a year-and-a-half of experience,” said David Kramer, a former Republican Party chairman for Nebraska who first supported Sasse’s 2014 primary opponents, but then backed him in the general election, Politico reported. “It’s forced and somewhat contrived for somebody who doesn’t have much to show … to all of a sudden be the darling of certain corners of the political spectrum for simply being the guy who says, ‘Don’t vote for Donald Trump.’”
Just last month, Republican officials at their state convention passed a resolution that basically rebuked Sasse for his press of a third-party candidate. But Sasse apparently hasn’t gotten the memo.
“I’m different that most people here in that politics is not the center of my life,” Sasse said, in a recent interview with Politico. “I am sure there are going to be times that I am going to [take] actions in the Congress that Mebraskans will disagree with. That’s fine … if the voters differ with that and if I, down the road, sought reelection, that’s their choice to make their decision. But it isn’t my job to put my finger in the wind and figure out short-term public opinion.”
Sasse has both tweeted and Facebooked his dislike of Trump as a candidate. And his fellow Nebraskan senator, Deb Fischer, who’s been in the Senate for two years longer than Sasse, says such public opposition to the obvious Republican presidential nominee is plain wrong.
“We just disagree [about Trump],” she said, Politico reported. “We’ve briefly [discussed it]. We just don’t agree on it. We look at this in a different way and I believe a third party, Ross Perot, gave us a Clinton and I’m not going to have a third party now give us another one.”
And one other Republican Party official speaking with knowledge about the Nebraska constituency said many just “don’t understand what he’s doing,” the news outlet reported.
