The University of Chicago has gone into shutdown mode after the FBI alerted of a gun–related threat on Monday.

“University security personnel are keeping in close contact with the FBI, which is continuing to investigate the threat,” said University of Chicago president Robert Zimmer, the Chicago Sun–Times said.

He also said the campus “will have an increased police and security presence on and around campus, including police personnel with visible weapons and other additional measures.”

The specifics of the threat aren’t known, except that it came online and mentioned a gun. But students have been told to stay inside their dormitories, and classes have been canceled for the day, Fox News reported.

“Upon learning of a possible threat, we shared information with law enforcement and university officials, as is our practice,” said FBI special agent John Hyde, in a written statement to the Chicago Sun–Times. “The decision to cancel classes was made by the university. Our investigation to determine the source of the online threat is ongoing.”

Counterterrorism officials hinted in a previous statement about the potential for mass violence, saying the threat involved the “campus quad.”
