Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg trash-talked two of the ranking Republican Party presidential candidates on nationally televised CNN Friday, first ripping former neurosurgeon Ben Carson as anti-science and then practically characterizing Sen. Ted Cruz as an idiot.
The context of discussion was climate change, when Bloomberg dismissed as “right-wing crazies” those who disagreed with the government-approved line of logic on the matter. CNN’s Christine Amanpour then asked what he thought of the Republican Party’s contenders for president.
“There’s one of them who was a surgeon, unfortunately at Johns Hopkins, who doesn’t believe in science,” Bloomberg said, AOL News reported. “Somebody said that’s like a business executive that doesn’t believe in profits.”
He then turned attention to Cruz.
“You’ve got a guy like Ted Cruz, who I think [attorney Alan] Dershowitz said was the smartest law student he ever had, and he says some of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard,” Bloomberg said. “The only explanation, the only explanation, is he doesn’t believe it. He’s just saying it. Ted Cruz is a smart guy and you can’t say what he says in an intelligent way.”
Cruz, whose numbers are surging in polls in recent days, has said in the past that he doubts much of what’s put forth as science on the matter of climate change.
“If you look at satellite data for the last 18 years,” he said in an August interview with Time magazine, “there’s been zero recorded warming. The satellite says it ain’t happening … I’m saying that data and facts don’t support it.”
