While the debate over the Obama administration’s refugee resettlement plan rages on, one Texas congressman says Americans should worry first about people from the Middle East who will soon flood across the nation’s unprotected southern border.
During a recent interview, Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar said there’s already plenty of evidence of Syrian refugees and people from elsewhere in the Middle East exploiting U.S. border weakness and lax immigration policies.
“They turned themselves in — so they were not trying to abscond themselves; they were not trying to sneak in. They just said here we are,” Cuellar said of eight Syrian refugees who recently turned themselves in to Immigration and Customs Enforcement after entering the country illegally.
That wasn’t an isolated incident, as Cuellar pointed out in a recent statement: “Honduran police stopped and detained five Syrians trying to enter the Central American nation illegally. According to a spokesman for the Honduran Police Investigation Unit, there is reason to believe these young men were going to try to illegally travel to the United States. While there is no evidence, as of today, that these men have ties to terrorism, this shows the important role our friends south of the border play in keeping our own nation safe.”
Just one day before the Syrians turned themselves in to authorities, five Pakistanis and an Afghan were apprehended trying to sneak into the country along the Arizona border.
According to the lawmaker, Congress should make sure that the U.S. is working with the governments of countries south of the border to mitigate any terrorist threat that illegal immigration could bring.
“Mexico stopped 174,000 people last year that were coming into the U.S, and they did it only with $80 million,” he said.
Cuellar, who voted in favor of a recent Republican bill to increase vetting for Syrian refugees, said that those coming in across the border are particularly concerning because once they’re released pending an immigration hearing, the government can’t realistically keep up with them.
