Donald Trump, leading Republican candidate for president, took his spat with the New York Times to the next level, doubling down on his denial of mocking a handicapped reporter and then demanding the newspaper apologize for accusing him of doing so.
In tweets sent out Thanksgiving Day, Trump said once again he didn’t poke fun of Serge Kovaleski, a New York Times journalist who suffers from arthrogryposis, a congenital condition that restricts the movements of his arms.
His campaign first opened with this clarification: “Donald J. Trump today demanded an apology fro the failing New York Times which accused him (during a major speech before 10,000 people in Myrtle Beach, SC) of mocking a reporter’s physical disability when in fact, Mr. Trump does not know anything about the reporter or anything about what the reporter looks like. He was merely mocking the fact that the reporter was trying to pull away from a story that he wrote 14 years ago.”
The statement then included this from Trump: “Serge Kovaleski must think a lot of himself if he thinks I remember him from decades ago – if I ever met him at all, which I doubt I did. He should stop using his disability to grandstand and get back to reporting for a paper that is rapidly going down the tubes.”
Trump later tweeted more on the issue.
“I do not know the reporter for the @nytimes, or what he looks like,” he wrote. “I was showing a person groveling to take back a statement made long ago!”
And then this, hitting back directly at the newspaper: “The failing @nytimes should focus on fair and balanced reporting rather than constant hit jobs on me. Yesterday 3 boring articles, today2!”
The spat is the latest involving Trump’s reported witnessing of Muslims cheering at the September 11, 2001, attacks on American soil. Trump at a recent campaign stop referenced an article by Kovaleski in 2001 when he wrote for the Washington Post that spoke of allegations of Muslims in the streets, cheering the attacks. Kovaleski shortly after went on CNN to clarify his report did not confirm Muslims were actually cheering in the streets.
Trump then spoke of the matter at a stop in South Carolina, flailing his arms as he spoke.
His arm movements were taken to mean he mimicked the handicapped reporter.
The New York Times called Trump’s behavior “outrageous,” the Hill reported.
As WND reported. the portion of Kovaleski’s report from 2001 that pertained to Muslims in the streets read: “In Jersey City, within hours of two jetliners’ plowing into the World Trade Center, law enforcement authorities detained and questioned a number of people who were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks and holding tailgate style parties on rooftops while they watched the devastation on the other side of the river.”
