Chicago protesters, angry at the fatal police officer shooting of a black teen, 17, turned their ire on a Christmas tree in the downtown streets, swarming the lighted display and tearing at the decorations.
The protests over white officer Jason Van Dyke’s shooting of black Laquan McDonald have been mostly peaceful. But as WND previously reported, there have been spots of tension and confrontation between police and community members, mostly when protesters blocked highways and verbally abused officers.
The Christmas tree assault was somewhat shocking, however.
As Jon Passantino tweeted of the scene, alongside a photo of several protesters tearing at the tree: “Chicago protesters attempt to tear down Christmas tree, chant, ‘this is part of the problem.’”
The post quickly generated feedback from other Twitter users.
“So damn stupid,” wrote one. “These protests are indeed important, but when they break laws, the message is lost.”
And another: “I’m an atheist, an anti–theist and anti–religion and even I love Christmas trees.”
Another, with humor: “Are they mad that the tree is up before Christmas? ‘Cause that’s why I’d be mad…”
Yet one more: “I don’t get how is a tree part of the problem, sorry I’m not on their level!??”
And another, more critical in tone: “They are a bunch of crybullies who like being on TV and imagining they are oppressed.”
