A headline at BigThink.com tolerantly warned, about the time the Supreme Court created “same-sex marriage, “If you oppose equal marriage, you are a bigot.”
Another, from Distractify.com, on the reaction to the decision, said “14 Butthurt Idiots React to Marriage Equality.”
Still another, at Salon, said “5 states where Christian-right homophobes got their just comeuppance.”
They were just a few of the attacks, since the Supreme Court’s ruling, on people who oppose redefining marriage.
But Michael Brown, a talk radio host and author of several books on homosexuality and the “gay”-rights movement, said it’s not a time to respond with similar epithets.
“Look, the culture wars get ugly,” Brown told WND. “The culture wars get messy. There is all kinds of name-calling. People would be shocked if they just see on my social media feed just in the course of a day what I get called, just as one person: bigoted, homophobic, and on and on. I mean, words too ugly to print.”
Paul Kengor, a university professor and author of “Takedown: From Communists to Progressives, How the Left Has Sabotaged Family and Marriage,” is also personally familiar with leftist scorn.
He says his critics have called him an “intolerant Christian” and characterized his traditional-marriage advocacy “hate-filled.” He also maintains that leftists will one day accept polygamous marriage as normal and insult the people who oppose it, as they do now with “same-sex marriage.”
“When it happens, they’ll approve it and they’ll call us names, the most hateful names, for not supporting it,” Kengor said. “That’s how progress progresses.”
Brown, whose column can be found at WND, said some critics even insult his religious heritage by slapping the dreaded N-word on him.
“Here I am, a Jewish follower of Jesus, I get called a Nazi,” he revealed. “I remember talking to one guy about it. He said, ‘But you are a Nazi.’ Just because I won’t celebrate two men marrying.”
However, Brown does not respond to his critics’ insults by hurling insults of his own, and he recommends other social conservatives refrain from doing so as well.
In his most recent book, “Outlasting the Gay Revolution,” the second principle Brown lists is “take the highest moral ground.”
See his explanation:
He explained the principle in an interview with WND: “What we have to do is say, ‘You may descend into the name-calling, you may descend into angry attitudes, you may be a bigot, but I’m not going to.’ Paul taught us to overcome evil with good. Jesus taught us to bless those who persecute us. The principle is that darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can drive out darkness.”
Brown gave an example of how he put the principle into action.
Earlier this month, someone posted on his Facebook page, “You are just as ugly as [ISIS]!”
Brown responded, asking: “Because we want to protect innocent babies in the womb? Because we care about marriage and family? Because we feed the poor and needy around the world? Because we want the whole world to know how wonderful Jesus is? Please be kind enough to explain your views.”
However, the commenter didn’t respond.
“So here’s how we prevail,” Brown told WND. “Here’s how we outlast the gay revolution: We join grace and truth together, hearts of compassion with backbones of steel, and that will always triumph in the end.”
