Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, an establishment Democrat if ever there was one, said something Thursday that ought to alarm Hillary Clinton’s campaign — especially since Hickenlooper gave Clinton his ringing endorsement only two months ago.
What might that be? He acknowledged that the Clinton email scandal has grown so problematic for Hillary that it may now be too big an obstacle for her campaign to overcome.
Speaking before a Denver audience, Hickenlooper flatly said Clinton’s chances look “kind of grim, to be blunt,” thanks to a scandal that has only expanded with almost-daily revelations that continue to indict the former first lady’s character and honesty.
From The Denver Post:
Gov. John Hickenlooper on Thursday became the latest Hillary Clinton supporter to express doubt about her candidacy for president, telling a Denver audience that the 2016 election is “kind of grim, to be blunt.”
… “I don’t know where this whole thing is going to go in terms of her … (e-mail) server and whether there is something in there that is really going to turn out to have broken the law — which I think would be the death knell.”
Hickenlooper was, of course, quick to point out that he really likes Clinton and thinks she’d be a great president, if it weren’t for her pesky pack-of-scandals-a-day habit.
Then he followed that qualifier by flipping the script again, blasting the political ideology of GOP front-runner Donald Trump. In the same breath, though, he wholeheartedly applauded Trump’s ability to see the Republican Party’s tone-deaf establishment through the eyes not of the party’s bosses, but rather of middle-class Americans — regardless of party affiliation.
“Donald Trump is saying something that not just Republicans but a lot of people are responding to. I think there’s a tremendous frustration that we have all these laws that aren’t being obeyed and that there is this kind of vacuum in our society. The middle class really is getting left behind,” he said.
“He is saying the wrong things. But I am old enough that I remember laughing when Ronald Reagan” came on the scene.
Apparently, Hickenlooper’s name was floated by someone, somewhere, at some point, as a potential Clinton running mate — despite his highly polarizing tenure as a pro-gun control governor in a state whose rural population takes the 2nd Amendment pretty seriously.
But his remarks Thursday all but assured Hickenlooper he’d just kissed his V.P. dreams goodbye, if ever they were there in the first place.
Hickenlooper more or less “withdrew himself as a running mate with Hillary Clinton this week after sounding the death knell for her campaign,” the Colorado Peak Politics blog quipped, noting the governor’s remarks amounted to “a eulogy” for Clinton’s presidential hopes.
