Bush rivalry with Rubio gets personal

Jeb Bush

Jeb Bush, former Florida governor, has been falling in presidential polls, and key donors think they’ve found a way to break him out of his lag: Get “more aggressive,” one said.

“Jeb has been criticized for not being aggressive enough,” a Bush bundler said, the Hill reported. “You’re going to see a more aggressive Jeb Bush from here on out. … You’ll see him be more assertive and going after Rubio.”

Sen. Marco Rubio has been beating Bush in the presidential polls with regularity.

Bush, twice in the last couple days, has hit back hard at the first-term senator, reminding voters exactly how Rubio’s star came into its light.

“Marco was a member of the House of Representatives when I was governor,” Bush said on MSNBC. “And he followed my lead and I’m proud of that.”

When asked if he thought Rubio had the proper leadership qualifications to be a president, Bush said: “It’s not known.”

He then pointed at Bill Clinton as an example of poor leadership.

Bush aides think their candidate needs to keep with the campaign line of his own experience versus Rubio’s fresh-faced career.

“Jeb is easily the most prepared, so he needs to raise that issue,” a Bush donor said to the Hill. “It’s easily the biggest difference between himself and Rubio. It’s the biggest difference between any governor and senator. Governors have to make the decisions every day that prepare you to be commander in chief on day one.”

But Rubio donors aren’t sitting quietly.

“I don’t know if [Bush is] desperate but it’s starting to stink like he is,” said Peter Brown, a Rubio donor from South Carolina, the Hill said. “He’s on the verge of becoming invisible in this race and all of a sudden, look who he’s going after.”

Both Bush and Rubio hovered around the same poll percentages for weeks, but Rubio has recently gained steam.
