If you’re a white male living in the United States of America today, then you already know you’re a worthless jerk whose success in life was predestined at birth thanks to the dastardly deeds of a long dead bunch of other white guys. You really ought to check your privilege, step out of the way and give someone else the chance to succeed.
There is no shortage of people who genuinely and fully agree with all of that. And if you aren’t one of them, you’re a racist/misogynist/bigot/whateverphobe.
But don’t feel too badly— it’s really easy to label people as bigots these days. Have you noticed? All you really need is an affinity for whatever the hottest social justice cause is this week and a disagreement with someone who doesn’t.
If your opponent argues facts, you delegitimize them as hate facts. If you’re opponent looks like a person whose hard work has provided financial comfort, you tell them they wouldn’t understand your point of view because of affluence. If you’re arguing with someone brazen enough to suggest life is tough but everyone is capable of success with a little go-getting, just let them know you’re uncomfortable and need to retreat to your safe space.
The first rule of being a shrieking soldier in the social justice army is remembering that weaknesses and personal shortcomings are always symptoms of a broader societal problem: patriarchy. Rule No. 2 is realizing that anyone who believes in the virtue of self-reliance is simply blinded by privilege.
The third and most important rule: White males are fair game for verbal accusation and abuse.
