The left-leaning nonprofit, Roots Action, sent out a petition calling for the removal of Debbie Wasserman Schultz as chair of the Democratic National Committee, painting the Florida lawmaker as a “tool” in Congress for the corporate world and a biased political operative on the campaign trail for Hillary Clinton.
And so far, the response has been overwhelming. The group reported at least 40,000 signed on to the petition, bluntly titled, “Remove Debbie Wasserman Schultz as DNC Chair.”
A message above the petition read: “In addition to her attempt to deny the Bernie Sanders campaign access to its own voter files, Wasserman Schultz has tried in other ways to minimize competition for her candidate, Hillary Clinton. She has done this by scheduling very few primary debates, and scheduling them at times of low TV viewing. In Congress, she has served as a pro-militarist and corporatist tool of the high bidders. … Enough is enough. We demand that Debbie Wasserman Schultz step down as chair of the DNC.”
On its website, Roots Action adds that Wasserman Schultz has also allowed for debates to be “run by corporate and/or incompetent moderators” who’ve outright failed to bring up some of the items most crucial of consideration to voters, including the widely contested Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, or TPP.
The nonprofit describes itself as an “independent online force” that’s been endorsed by the likes of academia’s Cornel West and Frances Fox Piven, and by long-running talk host and media star Phil Donahue.
“Wasserman Schulz has become a key operative and symbol of aversion to democracy at the top of the Democratic Party,” said Roots Action co-founder Norman Solomon, in a written statement. “Her removal as chair of the national party is necessary – though certainly insufficient – to shift the momentum in a positive direction.”
