NeverTrump Bill Kristol still vows 3rd-party candidate

The man who’s become the face of the NeverTrump movement, neoconservative “Weekly Standard” editor Bill Kristol, vowed once again a third-party candidate was on the way to challenge Donald Trump’s popularity in the presidential polls, emphasizing this as-yet unnamed individual would be backed by a “strong team” and run an “impressive” race.

In a late-night tweet, Kristol wrote: “Just a heads up over this holiday weekend: There will be an independent candidate – an impressive one, with a strong team and a real chance.”

The ‘Stop Hillary’ campaign is on fire! Join the surging response to this theme: ‘Clinton for prosecution, not president’

It won’t be Sen. Ben Sasse, who was talked up a few weeks ago as a strong contender for the job, and it won’t be Mitt Romney, the twice-failed Republican presidential candidate who also served as Massachusetts governor. Both Sasse and Romney have taken themselves out of the picture, CNN reported.

One source close to Romney put it this way, when asked about the former governor’s thoughts on running as an independent: “No, no, no, no, no. I promise you. No.”

Passing as well is Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a popular third-term lawmaker from Illinois whose Iraq War veteran status has bolstered his prestige and media popularity over the years. CNN reported Kinzinger, after much consideration, also said no to the independent challenge.

Kristol, meanwhile, is titillating the media and vowing, as late as Tuesday, a third-party candidate’s name will be released in the coming hours, despite the difficulties of getting in the race this late in the game.

Trump has come out hard against Kristol, trashing him on Twitter as a “spoiler” for the Republican Party, and warning of the repercussions to the country.

“The Republican party has to be smart & strong if it wants to win in November,” Trump tweeted. “Can’t allow lightweights to set up a spoiler indie candidate!”

And this one, also from Trump, was much blunter: “If dummy Bill Kristol actually does get a spoiler to run as an independent, say good bye to the Supreme Court!”

Kristol, in response, mocked the billionaire businessman.

“I’m traveling, so hadn’t realized I’d so upset @realDonaldTrump,” he wrote. “I’m sorry the mere mention of an independent candidate has so unnerved him.”
